12 diciembre Chris Brown Wants To Hit The Big Screen Like His Idol Usher'I can do it all: comedy, suspense, mystery,' says the singer.
Now that Chris Brown has followed his idol Usher to the top tier of the albums chart, he wants to chase him into movie theaters. 10 septiembre 50 Says He's No 'Super Actor' — And Tells Em He's Not A SuckerEm's taunts were playful, but 'Get Rich or Tryin' ' director's reprimands weren't always.
MIAMI — If you ever go out to brunch with 50 Cent, you might want to consider eating breakfast first. But hey, when you're responsible for more than half of the black music coming out of Interscope Records; have a new book and upcoming movie to push; clothes and sneakers to peddle; and a performance at the VMAs in about nine hours, you're bound to be a little late. And that's not even mentioning that you're ex-boo Vivica A. Fox is in the vicinity.
So the fact that 50 kept a handful of journalists waiting at the Ritz-Carlton for about an hour past the agreed-upon 11 a.m. meeting time wasn't frowned upon. After all, about half the journalists hadn't met 50 before and weren't about to tick off one of his burly bodyguards.
"The misperception is that I'm gangsta 50," he said shortly after showing up, with two bodyguards escorting him. Fif didn't have any guns on him, only his dimply smile and pearly whites. He sat down in a small, secluded room near a pool where Fox, L.A. Reid, the Hogan family and Christina Milian were dining. "That's the biggest misconception," he continued. "I can be [that] to people. I have a reputation. My past is my shadow; it follows me everywhere I go. All those things ... they put my back against the wall." If 50 has his back against the proverbial wall, it ain't showing. He's signed more deals than a Major League Baseball general manager, including, perhaps most importantly, a starring role in his first motion picture (see "50 Cent's 'Locked And Loaded' To Be Helmed By Oscar-Nominated Director"). "We started developing ['Get Rich or Die Tryin' '] a long time ago," he said over a cup of tea. 50 started filming last year and wrapped on July 8. Two days later, 50 was on the Anger Management Tour with hardly any time for rehearsals (see "Eminem, 50, Lil Jon, G-Unit, D12 Team Up For Anger Management 3 Tour This Summer"). (He actually did his prep for the tour every night in front of tens of thousands of people, switching up the show as he went along.) "Actually after the first week of sales [of Get Rich or Die Tryin', the album], [Interscope CEO] Jimmy [Iovine] started talking about the film," he said. "He said, 'Oh, he's gonna be big enough.' " Iovine quickly paired 50 up with writer Terence Winter, who scripts "The Sopranos." Winter hit the road later that year with 50, the G-Unit and esteemed writer Kris Ex, who eventually wrote 50's autobiography, "From Pieces to Weight" (check out our exclusive excerpts from the book).
"[Winter] came out on the road with me during the Rock the Mic Tour," Fif said (see "50 Cent And Jay-Z Announce Rock The Mic Tour Dates"). "We went out on the road and he stayed with me for two and half months. We was compiling information [for the book and movie] at the same time. If I tell you to tell me your life story right now, you'll miss so many things in one conversation that you'll have to come back. We got all the information together between all the things I said on tape to Terry and the things I said to Kris Ex ... the book was more close to detail 'cause the film is still just loosely based on my life. I still had to prepare for a role in the film. It's like there's portions of it that are a little fictional to make it fit cinematically."
Fif says it would be too difficult to fit the 29 years he's been on earth into 90 minutes and make it interesting to the public. But you'd think all that 50 would have to do is illustrate his relationship with Eminem for a blockbuster production: The two of them together are straight comedy. "Em was no help to me on the film," he laughed, causing everyone to snicker along with him. "He started teasing me, saying, 'Yo, I don't know why you let them talk you into that. It's gonna be terrible. They gonna have you up there for 20 hours doing this and that. How'd you let them [get you to do] that?' "I told him, 'They said you told me you wanted me to do it,' " he continued. " 'Cause [the producers] came to me like, 'Em thinks it's gonna be incredible ... when they go see the film, they'll see how different your lifestyle actually was ahead of the music.' Then [Em] gives me a whole different story. 'You know I ain't say nothing like that. You let them sucker you. You're a sucker.' " Eminem called 50 during the first week of filming for "Get Rich" and told his friend he was just playing with him; in fact, he did want Fif to do the movie. As previously reported, "Get Rich or Die Tryin' " mirrors 50's life as "8 Mile" did Em's. A young boy from one of the five New York boroughs (he's from the Bronx, not Queens) moves in with his grandparents and eight aunts and uncles after his drug-dealing mother is murdered in a fire. As a kid, Marcus is put into drug hustling by his mother's street friend, a kingpin played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (better known as Simon Adebisi in "Oz"). Eventually Marcus grows older, picks up a love for rap, but cannot let go of the streets. The same night he commits a robbery with his cohorts, one of whom is played by Terrence Howard, he's shot in the back. "I had to focus physically on what I was doing in order to get it right thematically. The portion where I was being operated on, I was sitting on the table for eight hours. But I been in this position before where these guys over me are just good actors. They don't understand how possible it is to be in that situation. When you've already experienced it, you're a little more conscious of it." Off-camera, 50 said the toughest part was getting in his zone in the midst of fans. One time his director, Jim Sheridan — whom he says he still hangs out with — even yelled at him for doing so. "He yelled at me toward the end when it didn't matter if I quit or not," 50 said. "We was in the Bronx shooting exteriors and [the filmmakers] don't understand that once we get back to New York I am 50 Cent regardless of what character I'm playing. They'll say, '50, focus, don't pay attention to the people.' I'll say, 'OK.' " But the fans didn't understand. "It'll start off like, 'Yo 50, we love you! 50! 50!' " he said. "They'll notice you're not paying attention to them and it's like, '50! F--- you, 50! D-Block! Dipset! Two guns up!' It turns into anything they can say to get your attention. They really don't mean anything bad by it. You got the kids who can't purchase the ticket by the barricade. 'I'm looking at 50. 50's right here!' That's how 2,000 kids get there. They get on their phone and be like, '50 is right here on my block in the Bronx.' It was 2,000 people easy, so I threw money in the crowd. Jim is like, 'What the f---? You'd think you'd do something better than that. The kids are gonna kill each other.' " No deaths, though. And in the movie, 50 isn't giving Arnold Schwarzenegger a run for the body count record, as you might expect. The G-Unit's general kills way more people on Get Rich or Die Tryin' the album than he does in the movie. Heck, he draws more firearms on the song "Gunz Come Out" off The Massacre than he does in the film. "Get Rich" is more of a focus on characters' emotions than it is their actions. We do see a side of 50 we've never seen before: his bare backside. "For me, I'm already conditioned to be a rapper. This is the first step in establishing myself as an actor. I take my time with it ... plus Denzel and them are getting old," he laughed, causing the entire room to laugh with him again. "To be honest with you," he added, "when the idea [for the movie] first came up, I was like, 'OK, let's see what happens.' It wasn't until I actually read the screenplay that I got excited and wanted to do a good job at it. I'm a rapper first. I'm not looking to turn into your super actor." After a long pause, he finished. "I might, because I did a really good job in the film. That's because once I commit to something, I can work at it hard enough to get a good job done." 50 Cent in "Get Rich or Die Tryin' " 03 septiembre Fat Joe Says 50's Taunts Led To VMA DisOddly, 50 said he was done with beef before show.
Fat Joe says he knows the Video Music Awards aren't the right place to be exchanging salvos with 50 Cent, but he didn't plan it that way. Joe. MTV shows me love. I come to these events to have a good time. I never had any type of incidents before. But at a certain point, what do you do?"
"I'm thinking, 'OK, we're about to fight.' I'm like, 'We're about to get it on right here at the VMAs?' " — Fat Joe
While introducing the acts for the reggaeton performance, Joe joked that the G-Unit brought tons of police with them. Later, during 50's set, the leader of the G-Unit retaliated by calling Joe a "pu---." 25 agosto Diddy's Ex-Stylist Lays Out The Dapper Rapper's Style RulesMike 'B.' Bogard covers everything from ice to doo-rags.
There's no question that this year's VMA host is one of the best-dressed men to ever step in front of the media's cameras. Diddy uses a myriad of methods to preserve his sexy. Just know though that he doesn't do it alone — he has a team to help
him stay as fly as a fully fueled Learjet, and among those who've served the dapper rapper is stylist extraordinaire Mike "B." Bogard. Mike worked with Diddy for 11 years before stepping off recently to start his own company, Bogard Management and Consulting LLC, where he does personal styling and even some ghost designing for clients that include Usher, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony. Here Mike B. gives his insight into the former Puff Daddy's rules for dressing for a major event. Diddy's 10 Fashion Commandments: Pressure Breeds Creativity - When you're Sean "Diddy" Combs, you really don't have to make up your mind about what you're going to wear until the last minute. For last year's VMAs, Diddy didn't pick out his black-and-white outfit until 20 minutes before he and Mase stepped out onto his yacht. Even then, he wasn't sure. "I never had much time when I was working with him," Bogard said. It's All About The Options - No wonder Diddy can't make up his mind. He carries enough articles of clothing in his wardrobe to cover an entire basketball team. When Mike B. was in his camp, the main requirement was to give the baddest Bad Boy plenty of options. Mike would have to lug between 10 and 12 different outfits that ranged from "young boy fresh" (jeans and a fly tee) to "grown and sexy." Fifteen to 25 pairs of sunglasses and maybe 15 to 25 pairs of shoes were also a must, ranging from a classic hard-bottom shoe to the latest kicks. Which brings us to commandment 2.5.: Make sure all his wares are there. "Even if you don't think he'll want it, bring it anyway," Bogard said. Be The One And Only - It doesn't matter if it's a pair of boxers, Diddy doesn't want to look like anyone else at a major shindig. Combs makes sure he has on an outfit and jewelry specifically designed for him. When it comes to footwear, the shoes have to be exclusive to him, or at least an early version not hitting shelves for several months. The Next Man Does Not Exist - When Diddy's at a red-carpet event, he's bound to run into his well-dressed contemporaries, such as Jay-Z, Andre 3000, Kanye West and even Farnsworth Bentley, but he's never worried about who Mr. Blackwell or some newspaper tabloid is going to give props to. "There was no competition for us," Mike B. said. "We the flyest dudes out. With my style and Puff's style and intuition and the way we put it together — finding the piece people would be scared to wear — it was a wrap." It Does Matter If It's Black Or White - "He don't really do pastel colors, he's not a Kanye West type of dude," Bogard said. Diddy is more of a Darth Vader/ storm trooper kind of guy. He loves all black or all white. According to Bogard, Diddy associates black with power and feels white is the center of attention. Combs guarantees that in most instances, white will light up any venue. Waves Are Enough - Diddy doesn't like to overdo it by throwing on a hat all the time. If he's wearing something like jeans and a tee, you might see a fitted ball cap. But if he's rocking a suit, a lot of times he's cool with letting people get "seasick" by looking at the waves in his hair, Mike B. said. That is, unless he's going for the Rat Pack look and wants to wear a short-brimmed fedora. Don't Do The Doo - Mike B. says you will never see Diddy come out to a function rocking just a doo-rag on his head. A doo-rag must be covered by a fitted cap or not worn at all. "The only time you'll see Puff with just a doo-rag on his head is when his barber just finished cutting his hair and he's getting dressed," Bogard said. "You gotta let them waves lay right." Know How To Navigate Your Thermostat - Even though Diddy has more jewels than Mr. T and Slick Rick combined, he's not going to wear them all at once. When you go to a well-publicized function, you have to know how to accessorize your ice. Sometimes you don't want to go too frosty, like if you have on a suit. "When he wears a suit, he might just throw on a nice pinky ring, nice watch and some earrings and cufflinks," Bogard said. "I call that 'a two-piece and a biscuit.' A lot of guys can't get that value meal. They have to start off at the dollar menu and get one piece at a time." However, "if he's onstage wearing his young-drug-dealer-fresh look, he might get gaudy." Don't Let It All Hang Out - When Diddy rolls into an ultra-swank soiree, he'll throw on a suit and you'd better believe that he's seen a tailor before anyone has seen him in his threads. A major no-no is wearing a suit too baggy, but even worse than that is wearing a suit too tight. Diddy might lose some of his cool if he were spotted getting his Shemar Moore on with something extremely form-fitting. Know Your Design - Diddy was hollering about diamonds being forever way before Kanye West. There's a method to his iced-out ways too. When he hollas at Jacob the Jeweler to help with the design of his shines, he really takes measures to ensure he not only has the right color, but the right clarity and cut. 15 agosto Game Signs On To Play Vicious Criminal In 'Waist Deep'Co-Star Tyrese describes film as 'L.A.-West-Coast-we-back-in-the-streets story.'
He's already completed The Documentary — so now it's time for a feature. Game has signed on to play a vicious criminal leader named Meat in the forthcoming "Waist Deep." The film, an urban action-thriller written and directed byVondie Curtis-Hall ("Redemption," "Gridlock'd," and, er, "Glitter"), already features Tyrese, Meagan Good and Larenz Tate. "Waist Deep" follows the story of ex-con O2 (Tyrese), who is trying to go straight for the sake of his son. But like so many celluloid ex-cons before him, he's forced to go outside the law one more time, and with good reason: Meat (Game) has carjacked and kidnapped O2's son. O2's cousin (Tate) is caught between two worlds and proves to be little help, so Coco (Good), a street-smart hustler, steps in. Of course, with an underworld plotline and a woman on the scene, you can expect "Waist Deep" to evoke more than a little "Bonnie and Clyde" romanticism. Or, to let Tyrese explain the movie in his own words: "It's gonna be an 'L.A.-West-Coast-we-back-in-the-streets' story." Game made his cinematic debut earlier this year in "Millionaire Boys Club" (see "Game Calls His First Onscreen Sex Scene 'Rough And Rugged' "). "Waist Deep" is slated for release in 2006. 03 agosto 50 Says He Doesn't Have Beef With GameBut he also says Game is only known 'in an eight-block radius in his neighborhood.'
SAN JOSE, California — 50 Cent has finally responded to Game's 15-minute-plus dis track, but not with the wrath most would expect. "It's a shame that it couldn't actually be resolved in conversation, but other than that, I don't
50 initially felt so burned by Game, who also attacked him at Summer Jam (see "Game Calls Attacks On 50, G-Unit Self-Defense: 'I Felt Like It's Five Against One' "), that he stopped pursuing artists for G-Unit Records and decided to "keep my hit records for me." "Then I thought about it and said, 'I'm not going to let one bad situation prevent me from being as great as I can be,' " he explained. "So I'm going to keep going forward [as a mentor]." The G-Unit leader, who booted Game in February for being disloyal (see "50 Drops Game From G-Unit; Shots Fired At Radio Station"), added that Game doesn't deserve his attention. "A lot of people think we're exactly the same [but] I could spin the globe and stop it and go there and be 50 Cent for a month, just tour in that country," he said. "They only know [Game] in an eight-block radius in his neighborhood. They take whatever they can to make a big deal about it. They sell 100,000, and then there's a 65 percent decrease in sales the next week. And the label's looking at them like, 'We don't even like you.' A 50 Cent campaign is not gonna sell your record." Although he's seemingly backing away from his beefs, 50 still stands by his dis track "Piggy Bank," which continues to earn reaction from the likes of Nas (see "Nas Disses 50 Cent, Not Jay-Z, At Rock The Bells Concert") and Lil' Kim (see "Lil' Kim's Wrath For 50, Foxy Has No Bounds On Naked Truth"). "When I put out 'Piggy Bank,' I'm addressing my issues, 'cause people are saying things that are making me uncomfortable in between making my albums just because they envy my situation," 50 said. "[The digs at me are] never fans saying something, like they don't like the music. Particularly in New York, 'cause everybody feels like they can make it. So they stop looking at things from the fan perspective and they become critics." Rather than feud, 50 would rather concentrate on his music, beginning with the re-release of The Massacre on September 6. "I'm a songwriter," he explained. "I find the right music, I write the right chorus and build the rest of the record around it. Some guys can battle, but they can't write a song to save their life. Battlers never make anything out of it. For me, I'm in the entertainment business." And to keep people entertained, 50 has shot videos for all 21 songs on the re-release, each of which will accompany the album on a DVD. "Usually an artist can envision what he's writing about, but the general public never gets to see what he was thinking," 50 said. "I feel like [the videos] do that to my album, explain it more in-depth." Along with the videos, 50 also just finished shooting his movie debut, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," due in theaters in November. Although he enjoyed the experience, he's thrilled to be back on the road, both on Anger Management and the off-night dates he is headlining. "I'm conditioned for this more," 50 said. "The movie set was cool. It was a learning experience, and I'm looking forward to doing it again. But I like to go in front of the people. I'm gonna go around the world twice and then come back to the studio and see what [Eminem's] made [me for my next album]." Hear more from 50 Cent, as well as Eminem, on "MTV News and DFX Present: Inside Em & 50's Anger Management," which premieres exclusively on MTV Overdrive on Wednesday, August 3, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. The show will make its on-air debut on MTV August 9 at 7 p.m. ET/PT. Also be sure to check out exclusive excerpts from 50's upcoming autobiography, "From Pieces To Weight." 29 junio Tupac Amaru Shakur FOUNDATIONTupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts Peace Garden Grand Opening, June 11, 2005 After many years of prayer and patience, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) is hosting the Grand Opening of its Visitor Center and Peace Garden on June 11, 2005. This is the first phase of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts (TASCA), in Stone Mountain, Georgia, that will eventually include a performing arts theater, museum, art gallery, community meeting space and classrooms. The Visitor Center will consist of a display gallery, rehearsal space for the annual Summer Arts Camp students, gift shop and TASF’s offices. The general public will be able to visit and view various exhibits (including personal items of Tupac and fan art work, among other pieces), as well as buy Tupac and TASF merchandise. The Peace Garden will be a beautifully landscaped 6-acre site designed as a place of reflection in honor of those who are no longer with us. A bronze statue of Tupac will ultimately stand in the center of the Garden, inside a fountain in the shape of the gothic cross universally associated with 2Pac. The Garden will also consist of a donor platform, wooden pavilions and a variety of other fountains spread throughout. Ms. Afeni Shakur, mother of rap’s greatest icon, founded the TASF in November 1997 to carry on the legacy of Tupac’s creative talents. The Foundation aims to provide top quality arts training to our youth from all backgrounds, primarily through its annual Summer Arts Camp. Students between ages 12–18 participate in intense training for 2–4 weeks under the direction of theatrical teachers and performers. TASCA has been designed as a way of maintaining that positive environment that allows students to gain an understanding of peer leadership, self-growth and discipline year-round. The Grand Opening ceremony, itself, will begin at 11:30 AM and will be held in the Center’s main parking lot at 5616 Memorial Drive. This momentous occasion will consist of welcoming remarks from a number of prominent community leaders, including special guest speaker Ms. Shakur. There will also be a special performance of Family Tree by “Pac’s Kids,” the students of the Summer Arts Camp, along with Celina Nixon, an original camp student and current coordinator of the camp. This will be followed by a the cutting of the ribbon at the Peace Garden by Ms. Shakur and a dedication of the Garden that will involve children planting a ceremonial tree. Guests will then be invited to explore the Visitor Center and Peace Garden and reflect amongst themselves. 13 junio Game Ends 50 Cent Truce With Verbal Attacks At Summer Jam
Game's set will be most discussed, but Jay-Z appearance was the show's high point. To say the truce between the Game and 50 Cent came to a screeching halt Sunday night would be an understatement. Think more along the lines of a major derailment, much like the big scene in "Speed," when the subway train carrying Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock crashes through the pavement and lands above ground. The tirade ended, ironically, with Game performing the song he and 50 made famous, "This Is How We Do." Before going into the verses, Game had more unfavorable words for the entire crew: "50 Cent can suck my ... / Tony Yayo can suck my ... /G-Unit can suck my ..." 21 mayo 50 Cent Avoids Jail With Plea Agreement
Judge orders rapper to attend anger management, pay victims' medical expenses. 50 Cent avoided a jail sentence on Friday, taking a plea deal on charges stemming from an incident at a May 2004 concert in which the rapper allegedly jumped into the crowd after being hit with a water bottle. Three counts of assault and battery50 Cent (whose real name is Curtis Jackson), entered a plea before Springfield District Court Judge Robert Kumor, conceding that the state had enough evidence to convict him, according to The Associated Press. Jackson pleaded not guilty in early November 2004 to assault-and-battery charges related to an alleged altercation at a concert earlier that year (see "50 Cent Pleads Not Guilty In Water-Bottle Incident"). The alleged incident occurred at an invite-only concert at the Hippodrome nightclub in Springfield, Massachusetts, on May 10, 2004. 50 Cent, who was not expected to perform, took the stage and was allegedly hit in the head by a water bottle thrown from the crowd (see "50 Cent Performance Cut Short After Fan Throws Water At Him"). The rapper leapt into the crowd after the fan, leading to a brawl in which three women were reportedly injured; two claimed they were kicked in the head and face, and one accused Jackson of punching her in the face. Kumor outlined several conditions Jackson must adhere to in order for the charges to be wiped from his record. 50 Cent, who appeared in a gray double-breasted suit and silver tie, was ordered to stay off of drugs for two years and will undergo random drug screenings during that time to ensure he stays clean. The rapper will have to attend anger-management counseling and produce an educational anti-violence public service announcement. He was also banned from carrying a gun in Massachusetts. The judge additionally ordered Jackson to pay $3,000 in court costs and make restitution to the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses. If Jackson violates any of the conditions of his probation, a judge could sentence him to two-and-a-half years in jail for each of the three assault-and-battery charges. Jackson's alleged victims had asked the court to severely punish the rapper. Assistant District Attorney Donna Donato had recommended a two-year sentence, with one year to be served and the second suspended with probation and other conditions.
11 mayo Dr. Dre's Detox 'The Most Advanced Rap Album Ever,' Co-Producer Says
Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop will guest, according to Scott Storch. The next album from Dr. Dre, The Detox, probably won't hit the street until the end of 2004, his label said. But Scott Storch, a co-producer working on the disc, insists it will be well worth the wait."I'd describe it as the most "I'd describe it as the most advanced rap album musically and lyrically we'll probably ever have a chance to listen to." — producer Scott Storch Dre has been working on the LP over the past year, and he and Storch have built dozens of beds of beats, various innovative rhythms and the skeletons for numerous songs, all of which are being fleshed out. No tracks have been titled yet and no final cuts chosen. "When I work with Dre, he usually does more than 100 records and then picks his favorites," Storch said. "But there are all kinds of new rhythms in there. He always tries to stay a couple of steps ahead of the field. There's gonna be a lot of personal stuff on the album and a lot of hot sh--." Creating the "most advanced" rap album is no easy task, especially when, like Dre, you're a perfectionist with a reputation as a visionary leader. "Dr. Dre always tries to top his last one," Storch said. "That's why he spends so much time putting them together and they don't come out every five minutes. He puts a lot of time, energy and genius into the stuff." Like Dre's 1999 album, Dr. Dre 2001, The Detox will feature numerous guest stars. Storch said Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Knoc-Turn'al would record parts as well as newer names like Lloyd Banks, Guvner and Game. "The whole family is gonna be on there," Storch said. "If not the last Dre album, this is gonna be one of the last Dre albums we're gonna get. So he's putting a lot into it. It's just a matter of making a classic experience" (see "Dr. Dre's Final Album Will Be Hip-Hop Musical").
